Scientists are interested in the details of how volcanoes erupt, so they analyze temperature, pressure, and the chemistry of magma. Some volcanologists study the way gas bubbles nucleate and expand, using laboratory models to simulate magma processes. Gases are dissolved in magma at pressures many thousands of times atmospheric pressure.Volcanic gas is dissolved in magma; at the surface of the earth, it escapes to the atmosphere. The sudden release of pressure on a confined gas produces an explosion. Back to top. University of Hawaii at Hilo. Skip to content Geology Department. What causes the explosion when Mentos are dropped into Diet Coke? Why do Mentos explode in soda? Will Mentos work with any soda? How do you make a Mentos and soda volcano? What happens when you mix Coke Mentos and baking soda? Does the flavor of Mentos affect the explosion? Does Mentos gum explode soda? Can you mix Coke with Mentos? Is Mentos a chewing gum? What is the hypothesis for the Diet Coke and Mentos experiment? Does Coke and vinegar react? Can you drink Coke and baking soda? By Hazel Muir. Scanning electron microscope images show the roughness of mint Mentos top and bottom left and fruit Mentos top and bottom right , the scale bars representing lengths from 20 to micrometres. The startling reaction between Diet Coke and Mentos sweets, made famous in thousands of YouTube videos, finally has a scientific explanation. Theories abound as to why this happens, with some bloggers speculating that it is an acid-base reaction because Coke is acidic.Experiments in a edition of the Discovery Channel programme Mythbusters suggested the chemicals responsible for the reaction are gum arabic and gelatine in the sweets, and caffeine, potassium benzoate and aspartame in the Coke. You can try testing different kinds of carbonated beverages, different kinds of candies with different shapes and textures or using other things to start the reaction, like rock salt, pennies or dice.Which beverages, candies or other things cause the largest and smallest fountains? Why do you think this is? Does temperature affect the eruption height? Observations and results Was the eruption higher when whole Mentos candies were used compared with crushed candies? Was less Diet Coke left in the bottle after the reaction with the whole candies compared with the crushed ones? In the Diet Coke bottle the Mentos candy provides a rough surface that allows the bonds between the carbon dioxide gas and water to break more easily, helping to create carbon dioxide bubbles. As the Mentos candy sinks in the bottle, the candy causes the production of more and more carbon dioxide bubbles, and the rising bubbles react with carbon dioxide that is still dissolved in the soda to cause more carbon dioxide to be freed and create even more bubbles, resulting in the eruption. Because Mentos candies are rather dense, they sink rapidly through the liquid, causing a fast, large eruption. The crushed Mentos candies, however, are not as dense as the whole ones, which causes them to sink more slowly, creating a relatively small cola fountain, which should also leave more liquid in the bottle than the larger eruption with whole Mentos candies did. Cleanup Hose off any part of a building that was splashed with Diet Coke.If you try this project with regular Coke, the eruption should still happen but its sugary content may make cleaning more difficult. This activity brought to you in partnership with Science Buddies. Topography, soil conditions, and ground cover also play an important role. Flash floods occur within a few minutes or hours of excessive rainfall, a dam or levee failure, or a sudden release of water held by an ice jam.Flash floods can roll boulders, tear out trees, destroy buildings and bridges, and scour out new channels. Rapidly rising water can reach heights of 30 feet or more. Furthermore, flash flood-producing rains can also trigger catastrophic mud slides. You will not always have a warning that these deadly, sudden floods are coming. Most flash flooding is caused by slow-moving thunderstorms, thunderstorms repeatedly moving over the same area, or heavy rains from hurricanes and tropical storms. Occasionally, floating debris or ice can accumulate at a natural or man-made obstruction and restrict the flow of water. Water held back by the ice jam or debris dam can cause flooding upstream.Subsequent flash flooding can occur downstream if the obstruction should suddenly release. Identify where to go if told to evacuate. Choose several places Know your area's flood risk. For information, call your local National Weather Service office, Red Cross chapter, or local emergency management agency.Check your homeowner's or renter's insurance. Homeowners' policies do not cover flooding. Contact your insurance agent to find out how to get flood insurance. Even 6 inches of fast-moving flood water can knock you off your feet, and a depth of 2 feet will float your car! NEVER try to walk, swim, or drive through such swift water. If you come upon flood waters, STOP! Winds generated from tropical storms and hurricanes or intense offshore low pressure systems can drive ocean water inland and cause significant flooding.Escape routes can be cut off and blocked by high water. These waves are produced by earthquakes or volcanic activity. As land is converted from fields or woodlands to roads and parking lots, it loses its ability to absorb rainfall. Urbanization increases runoff 2 to 6 times over what would occur on natural terrain.During periods of urban flooding, streets can become swift moving rivers, while basements can become death traps as they fill with water. An arroyo is a water-carved gully or norma lly dry creek bed. Arroyos can fill with fast-moving water very quickly. Geoscience Australia:. The Australian Flood Risk Information Portal the portal enables flood information, currently held by different sources, to be accessible from a single online location. The portal includes a database of flood study information and metadata the Australian Flood Studies Database. The portal provides access to authoritative flood maps and flood studies, as well as information about surface water observations derived from the analysis of satellite imagery. The portal incorporates tools that enable users to search, display and retrieve information. The data management tools and standards that have been developed for the portal will enable data custodians to standardise their data and upload it to the portal, or to make compliant data accessible via web services. The information in the portal has been provided by local, state and territories governments. Contributing more flood studies will significantly enhance its value. It will improve our understanding of flood behaviour on a regional scale, which is essential because floods do not respect jurisdictional boundaries. The Australian Flood Risk Information Portal the portal hosts data and tools that allow public discovery, visualisation and retrieval of flood studies, flood maps, satellite derived water observations and other related information from a central location. The portal is focussed on providing access to flood information from authoritative sources. The main catalogue of information available through the portal is the Australian Flood Studies Database. Information in the portal can be searched and accessed by all users, but only registered users can add flood studies and associated maps to the database.A registered user would typically have been responsible for the creation or publication of flood hazard information, and might include state authorities, local councils, consultants and authorised data custodians. Data custodians can share their flood study information with other users either by adding data directly into the portal's data catalogue, the Australian Flood Studies Database, or via web services. Data Entry Information Information on entering data into the portal, including how to login or register to use the Data Entry Application.Portal Framework Describes the overarching approach taken in developing the portal, as well as the agreed principles and benefits supporting the portal. Log in.This review highlighted the lack of consistency across the country in the way flood risk information was collected and made available to users. The review also recognised the need for consumers to be aware of the natural disaster risks they may face, as well as the benefits of making flood risk information more readily accessible. In response to these findings, the Government established the National Flood Risk Information Project NFRIP with the aim of improving the quality, availability and accessibility of flood information across Australia and, in doing so, raise community awareness of flood risks. This four year project commenced on 1 July and delivered three products; the portal, Water Observations from Space and the Australian Rainfall and Runoff Guidelines. The portal is used by engineers, insurers and planners to find out what flood mapping information exists, and where, so they can better understand risks. Researchers and consultants can learn what work has already occurred in their area of interest and identify what data may be available for use in future studies. Organisations can refine the scope of planned flood studies by understanding and applying lessons learnt from work undertaken in other regions.Others in the community can also use it to find out what flood information exists for the area that they live in. A flood study is the scientific investigation of flooding in a particular area, usually the catchment of a river system. It may involve hydrologic and hydraulic investigations and a statistical analysis of the frequency with which floods have occurred. The purpose of a flood study is to predict the depth of water and the extent to which it will inundate the landscape in a modelled flood event.A flood map is the result of hydrologic and hydraulic analysis by scientific subject matter experts, that takes into account many factors when developing models for various scenarios. Such factors might include: terrain, water catchments, flood marks and information from historical floods.A map can represent the extent of a flood, the probability of that event occurring and sometimes the depth of inundation in the modelled area. While some flood studies don't include separate mapping data, maps relevant to the specific study can be found in many of the attached flood study documents. The AFSD contains general information for available studies, including the study location, date, commissioning organisation and lead consultant, and metadata on flood studies and information on flood risk. The metadata is created through a purpose-built data entry application, and adheres to the Flood Studies Data Model XML schema which can be used by data custodians to structure and share their flood information with the portal via webservices.Where available, these can be downloaded directly from the Details section in the Australian Flood Risk Information Portal once you have identified a study you are interested in. If the study you're interested in has no downloads, you will need to contact the commissioning organisation identified in the study record to determine if a copy of the report is available.Contact your local State Emergency Services if you require assistance in the event of a flood. Indeed, it is estimated that more than 30, U. This constant cycle of post-flood rebuilding can lock people into a costly and dangerous situation. It also wastes billions of dollars, which in turn threatens the NFIP itself. Mitigating potential loss from future floods requires knowing where floods are most apt to occur.NFIP relies on these maps to assess flood risk, determine insurance rates, and establish floodplain management standards. When Hurricane Sandy hit in , for example, many of the maps for areas that were flooded had not been updated in nearly 30 years. The flooding that resulted from the storm covered an area 65 percent larger than the flood-vulnerable area identified by FEMA. Keeping flood maps up to date is critical because flood risks change as land use and other factors change. Floods, for example, become a greater risk when more pavement and other impervious surfaces are built over an area. Instead, they rely on historical data to determine future flood hazard projections.Moderate- to low-risk areas called non-special flood hazard areas are regions with less flood potential though properties in these areas still account for more than 20 percent of NFIP claims. High-risk areas also known as special flood hazard areas —or simply floodplains are regions with a 1 percent 1 in chance of being inundated by river or stream floodwaters of a certain magnitude in any given year. The term year flood refers to this, not a flood expected to occur just once every hundred years. But even a 1 in chance of flooding each year equates to about a 1 in 5 chance a home will flood at some point over the life of a year mortgage. But we can take steps to lessen their devastation. The latter, scrapped by President Trump in , included, among other things, commonsense measures such as requiring FEMA to rebuild flood-damaged public infrastructure police stations, schools, hospitals, and the like to be safer and stronger than their pre-flood incarnations.A poll showed that the vast majority of Americans support such flood-smart federal measures—and for good reason. Moreover, such measures increase the odds that millions more Americans will stay safe—and dry. Finally, curbing climate change is an important way to avert some of the worst scenarios for sea level rise and escalating flood risks. As the IPCC has made explicitly clear , limiting global average temperature rise to within 1. And only ambitious climate action can make that happen. In images both beautiful and disturbing, photographer Kadir van Lohuizen documents how sea level rise is altering coastlines—and lives—around the world. The Quinault Indian Nation is one of several Pacific Northwest tribes planning for relocation, among many other climate adaptation strategies. The planet is sending us an unmistakable signal that we need to wake up and take real action to combat the climate crisis. And this is the decade we need to do it. As climate change brings heavier rains, local officials and developers are managing the deluge of stormwater runoff with some low-tech—and pretty—solutions. Stronger storms and harsher cold snaps could mean more dramatic ups and downs for lake levels in the future.Whether and how to uproot communities are difficult and painful questions, and we need to get better at answering them. Millions of people in America could be displaced by rising sea levels and repeated flooding. Yet, as Kentucky resident Olga McKissic learned, it can take years to get the help needed to move to higher ground. Multimedia artist Monica Jahan Bose is sharing stories about climate impacts through the saris worn by the women of her ancestral village.Historic flooding recently inundated parts of the Cornhusker State where the proposed Keystone XL pipeline would pass through. A new novel imagines what life in Bangkok would be like if nearly half the city were underwater—which some experts say is a real possibility. The most widespread, damaging storms on earth are getting worse, and climate change is a big reason why. As floods become more frequent and severe with climate change, protecting your home becomes even more crucial. Ditch-diggers and cement trucks?Try trees and rainwater cisterns. City planners across the country are realizing that green infrastructure is the key to climate resilience.
