Arthritis is most commonly diagnosed on x-rays, but with early cases, inflammation within the joint lining and an increase in joint fluid can be visualised with an ultrasound scan. Because it is a high motion joint, arthritis can be particularly troublesome to treat, but the majority of cases respond favourably to intra-articular medications.
