Hiss, who had been encouraged to leave the State Department after serving as Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs and helping organize the first United Nations conference, appeared and firmly denied knowing Chambers or being a Communist.Subsequent hearings demonstrated that Chambers knew a great deal about Hiss, his family, and his personal life, and Hiss eventually recollected knowing Chambers under a different name during the s.Hiss dared Chambers to repeat his remarks outside a congressional hearing. When Chambers did so, Hiss filed a lawsuit for slander. During the discovery process of the trial, Chambers retrieved documents he had hidden with a relative when he broke with the Communist movement in They included reports on State Department activities and other evidence of espionage. Chambers now admitted that Hiss had been engaged in espionage and that he had lied to HUAC to protect him.Chambers temporarily hid some of the material he had secreted away in a hollowed-out pumpkin on his farm before turning it over to HUAC. Hiss was indicted for perjury — lying to a grand jury about giving State Department documents to Chambers and denying he had met Chambers in — because the statute of limitations on espionage had expired.Chambers and his wife testified to the close relationship they had with the Hiss family. FBI technical staff affirmed the documents had been typed on a Hiss family typewriter and that handwritten material was from Hiss. Another Soviet defector testified that she knew Hiss to be a Soviet spy. The Hiss defense tried to paint Chambers as mentally ill and a serial perjurer. A string of distinguished Americans, including two Supreme Court justices, served as character witnesses for Hiss during the first trial, which ended in a hung jury.Hiss was convicted of perjury in a second trial in January and sentenced to five years in prison. For conservatives, the case demonstrated the blind eye the New Deal had for Soviet subversion. After unsuccessful appeals, Hiss went to prison. To the end of his life he maintained his innocence, insisting the FBI had built a typewriter to frame him and planted it as evidence. The second major Cold War trial, that of the Rosenbergs, began with the successful decoding of a Venona cable informing the Soviets about gaseous diffusion, a process used in making the atomic bomb. Its author was Klaus Fuchs, a German-born physicist working as part of the British team at Los Alamos; he fit the profile of Rest, a code name in the Venona decryptions. Once arrested, Gold also confessed and implicated a soldier and his wife from whom he had picked up a report on the bomb in New Mexico in — David and Ruth Greenglass, whose code names were Caliber and Wasp, respectively.Rosenberg had been directing an extensive espionage network. Although the evidence against Ethel was thin, it supported a charge of conspiracy. The Venona decryptions could not be used in court because there was some question of whether they were legally admissible and, in any case, American intelligence officials did not want to alert the U.So the only way to expose and prosecute the other members of his espionage ring was for Rosenberg to cooperate, but he did not. Though many believed that Hiss was a much-maligned official who became a victim of the anticommunist hysteria of the lates, others felt strongly that he was a lying communist agent. Until his death at the age of 92 on November 15, , Hiss never deviated from his claim of innocence. Matt used to play the piano before he began to sing in his first band, "Successful Failure".In following years, Shadows formed a number of bands with Avenged Sevenfold's rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance. Zacky was previously a member of a punk group called 'MPA. While Shadows was in the previously mentioned "Successful Failure", The Rev was slotted to play drums but was admittedly too good. While in this band he penned the song "Streets," which would later be recorded after Avenged Sevenfold band was formed, and released on the first album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. The album was a mix of metalcore and punk rock but also includes a softer, more ballad-like song Warmness On The Soul. Sounding the Seventh Trumpet was first recorded and produced while Shadows and the rest of Avenged Sevenfold were still in high school.Shadows has stated that he feels a strong support for the troops serving the United States, having very close friends who are currently in service in Iraq. The song "M. The song "Gunslinger" from Avenged Sevenfold's self-titled album further expresses these feelings though it was stated in the album's extra MVI that it's not just about troops - "It can be about anyone away from home, missing their families.Shadows has made guest appearances on numerous albums by numerous different artists. He also produced The Confession's album, Requiem, which, according to an interview, was one of the first steps which led to Avenged Sevenfold self-producing their self-titled album. In the band's debut album, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet , M. Shadows' vocals had a heavy metalcore influence and consisted mostly of screaming vocals. This style gradually decreased in later albums into more conventional clean singing and had been almost completely jettisoned with the exception of backing introduction screams by the release of City of Evil , the band's major label debut. After the release of City of Evil a rumor had developed stating that the reason why M. Shadows dropped the screaming was either due to blowing a blood vessel or ripping a vocal cord in the back of his throat. As he grew older, he expanded his tastes and found he was a fan of heavy metal, and so he learned guitar, which he told us during an interview of "Wikipedia: Fact or Fiction? After a short period in a band called Successful Failure while he was in high school, Shadows went on to form Avenged Sevenfold with some of his classmates. I got forced into it," he laughed. The newly-appointed vocalist adopted the alias "M. Shadows" because he felt he was "the darker character in the group" amongst the rest of his bandmates.Inspired by Slash , the rest of them decided to pick stage names as well. Shadows has been the distinctive, powerful voice behind the band since its formation in , and they've released seven albums together so far. It's been quite the journey so far, between overcoming the death of their drummer the Rev and Shadows' several throat surgeries, but they've still got a long way to go.
