This time, the adjectives aren't interchangeable. If you reverse them, you can probably see why. This means they shouldn't be separated with a comma. The truth is, frozen yogurt is more than just an adjective followed by a noun. It's type of thing , like a miniature poodle , striped shirt , or even hot chocolate. All of these examples are made up of two words, but they represent a single thing. If you separate them with a comma—or write them in a different order—the words lose their meaning. You might already know that an incomplete sentence is a fragment. When you begin a sentence with a fragment, it's called an introductory clause. To learn more, check out our lesson on Fragments. It's perfectly OK to begin a sentence this way, then follow it with a complete thought. You just have to separate these thoughts with a comma. This makes the sentence easier to read, and it also tells the reader where to pause if needed. In the example above, the thing before the comma while you were sleeping is a fragment; the thing after the comma I gave you a new haircut is a complete sentence. The comma is necessary only if the clause introduces the sentence. If the phrases were written in the opposite order, you wouldn't use a comma. What about expressions like luckily , however , and as you can see? It's more common to see these at the beginning of a sentence, but they can appear the end as well.Unlike introductory clauses, they don't necessarily add anything new to the sentence. Regardless, they should always be separated by a comma. For example: I gave you a new haircut, as you can see. You should also use commas to separate nonessential clauses that appear in the middle of a sentence. A nonessential clause is something that adds meaning but that isn't completely necessary. In other words, if you took it out the sentence would still mean basically the same thing. To find out if a clause is nonessential, try removing it from the sentence, then see how it sounds. The sentence above would still make sense if we removed the detail about the ascot. It would be: Steve is very tidy. If the clause was essential, we wouldn't be able to remove it. Try this sentence instead: Men who wear ascots are very tidy. If we take out the detail about the ascot, we're left something slightly different: Men are very tidy. This is far too general to be true—after all, some men are really sloppy. This is how you know the clause is essential to the sentence's meaning. As you gain more experience with commas, you'll run into cases when your judgment matters more than ever. These cases are more difficult to define, but they build on the rules we just discussed. For instance, some sentences end with a type of fragment called a free modifier. This is just a fancy word for something that clarifies or relates to another part of the sentence. When you use a free modifier like this, always separate it with a comma. Other sentences end with a distinct pause , followed by something more ambiguous. That final beat could be the name of the person you're talking to, a statement of confirmation, or a single word.Whatever it is, that beat also should be separated by a comma. Below are two sentences that include a series of commas—one is correct, and the other is not. Use what you just learned to decide which one is correct, then click the dots to see if you're right! Here, an essential clause has been mistaken for a nonessential clause. The kitten was cute. You can often spot them because they begin with conjunctions or prepositions , like after, as, before, if, since, that, though, unless, until, when, and while. After I visited the animal shelter. You can join one or more independent clauses to form a compound sentence, and independent clauses can be added to dependent clauses to form complex sentences. A comma splice happens when you connect two independent clauses with a comma instead of a conjunction or other appropriate punctuation like a semicolon. The kitten was cute, I wanted to take it home with me.The kitten was cute is an independent clause. It can stand alone as a sentence. The same thing applies to I wanted to take it home with me. The comma incorrectly splices the two sentences together. I wanted to take it home with me. The kitten was cute, so I wanted to take it home with me. The kitten was cute; I wanted to take it home with me.In the example above, you could use therefore in place of the semicolon. Those clauses are directly related. When in doubt, let clarity be your guide.Conjunctions are words that link other words, phrases, or clauses together. When should you use commas with conjunctions? The pet store was fresh out of kitten toys, so I had to improvise. The pet store was fresh out of kitten toys; therefore I had to improvise. The serial comma should always be used where it is needed to avoid confusion. Can you see the ambiguity in the example below? In this situation, the serial comma needs to be used. Otherwise, depending on the chosen style guide, it is considered optional. Still, not using the serial comma is relatively uncommon in American English, except in newspapers and magazines.Another type of relationship between ideas that writers signal to readers with a comma is that of accumulation. Occurring at the end of a sentence, cumulative clauses hook up to a main clause and add further information. They often include additional descriptive details. Commas should also be used when writing dates. There should always be a comma between the day and the year and between the year and the rest of the sentence. Even when the date is not a dependent clause, as it is in the previous example, the last item in the date should be followed by a comma.Calling in sick for work, Beth hoped her boss would not suspect anything : The title contains a verb in its introductory phrase, which warrants a comma before the final clause. The comma serves a variety of grammatical functions, including to indicate pauses or set off introductory phrases, as in the title example. Comma usage errors fall into two categories: using unnecessary commas and failing to use necessary commas. A comma splice occurs when two independent clauses that is, two complete sentences are joined only by a comma. In those situations, an acceptable form of punctuation would be a semicolon or a period. For example:. You can make two complete sentences by inserting a period. This is the strongest level of separation. You can use a semicolon between the two clauses if they are of equal importance; this allows your reader to consider the points together. You can use a semicolon with a transition word to indicate a specific relation between the two clauses; however, you should use this sparingly. You can use a coordinating conjunction following the comma, and this also will indicate a relationship. Or, you can add a word to one clause to make it dependent. The independent clauses may not have any punctuation separating them, or they may have a coordinating conjunction between them, but without the comma that needs to accompany it to separate the independent clauses.Fixing run-on sentences is very similar to fixing comma splices. You can use a coordinating conjunction and a comma, and this also will indicate a relationship. Privacy Policy. Skip to main content. Overview of English Grammar: Punctuation and Mechanics. Why commas matter

All spills should be immediately marked with a warning sign to prevent exposure to others. Glass should never be handled by hand; always use a scoop. The cleanup should be done by as few people as feasible, but there should be at least two people involved.Small spills less than 5ml or 5mg that occur outside of a biological safety cabinet should be cleaned immediately by personnel wearing gowns, doubled protective gloves and eye protection. Small amounts of liquid should be wiped with absorbent pads, while solids should be wiped with a wet absorbent gauze. Spill areas should be cleaned at least three times with the detergent described above.Broken glass should be placed in a small container and placed in the disposal bags. All contaminated materials should also be placed in the garbage bags.Unbroken glassware or reusable items that have been contaminated should be placed in a plastic bag and washed, following the procedures for cleaning reusable items that have been developed for the workplace. Cover the spill with an absorbent sheet or spill control pads.If the drug is in powder form, a wet or damp cloth should be used. For large spills, protective clothing should be worn with the addition of the respirator to protect against any airborne powder or aerosols. The use of chemical inactivates is not recommended as they may create a hazardous by-product. As with small spills, all contaminated areas should be cleaned a minimum of three times, and all contaminated products and equipment should be disposed of or cleaned in an appropriate manner. After the procedures described above are followed, the interior of the hood may also require cleaning. The filter must then be changed and disposed of as soon as possible by trained personnel who are wearing the appropriate protective clothing.Protective goggles if not disposed of should be thoroughly cleaned with an alcohol wipe after cleanup. Areas where cytotoxic drugs are stored should be separated from regular storage, and clearly marked.Engineering controls locks, limited access key card systems should be in place to prevent unauthorized personnel from entering the storage area. An inventory of the cytotoxic drugs that is frequently reviewed should be kept in the room, along with instructions for cleaning spills. Where possible, other drugs should not be stored with cytotoxic drugs.Clear warning labels should be used to identify the cytotoxic drugs and point out their hazards. Shelves should also be fitted with a lip or back slope that prevents the drugs from falling to the floor. When a damaged container is found, it should only be handled by trained personnel with personal protective equipment described previously. Broken containers and contaminated packing material should all be placed in the appropriate puncture proof container and disposed of as cytotoxic biological waste.Cytotoxic drugs should be securely capped and sealed and should be packed in impervious packing material. Labels of all boxes, containers and vials should indicate that the substance is a cytotoxic drug. Most jurisdictions do not specifically cover cytotoxic drugs in legislation or regulations. However, in all Canadian jurisdictions it is the general duty of the employer to keep the workplace safe and to eliminate foreseeable hazards. Two provinces that do specifically cover cytotoxins are B. The legislation also specifies that employees should be aware of information regarding the a acute and chronic toxicity, including any potential reproductive hazard, b acute exposure treatment, c safe handling of, and d the proper labeling of cytotoxic drugs and their storage areas. Safe work procedures must also be developed for receiving, preparation, administration, storage, disposal and waste handling. The legislation also covers a installation and maintenance of the biological safety cabinets, b development of a program to protect the workers from exposure, c emergency procedures in case of exposure, d disposal of cytotoxic drugs, and e equipment used to administer the drugs. There is no safe exposure level for any carcinogen, including cytotoxic drugs. All steps must be taken to ensure the safest and healthiest workplaces possible, and that workers are made aware of the locations where cytotoxic drugs may be present so that they can take the appropriate precautions. Some cytotoxic drugs are mutagens that may damage the DNA in sperm of male workers and the ova of female workers. As previously stated, workers who are pregnant or considering reproduction should demand protective re-assignment with no loss of pay or benefits. The information contained in this fact sheet relates to the minimal requirements for cytotoxic drug administration and use, and should be considered only as a basic starting point in the development of healthy work practices.Connor and Melissa A. In recognition of the potential health and safety risks from working with cytotoxic drugs, SA Health has put together a risk management guide for the handling of cytotoxic drugs and related waste. The risk management model provided in the guide will enable healthcare services to assess and evaluate site-specific clinical and operational factors in the development of safe work procedures for the safe handling of other hazardous drugs.Any person using, handling or storing prohibited or restricted carcinogens must be authorised to do so. Exposure may be through: skin contact skin absorption inhalation ingestion needle stick injuries.CSTDs should not be the only control measure put in place — they should be just one in a range of control measures to minimise the risks of cytotoxic drugs to workers. Should be cleaned at the end of shift or when contaminated. Clean with a detergent that is pH neutral and leave to air dry. More information: Protective clothing.PCBUs should also refer to their own health and safety policies and guidance about handling cytotoxic-contaminated linen and clothing. Should fit snugly around the head, fully enclose the hair, and be made of disposable, low-linting material. The time it takes for the drugs to be fully eliminated from the body depends on the patient and the particular drug.WorkSafe recommends that workers wear appropriate PPE for the entire elimination period. This is generally seven days but may vary depending on the drug and route of excretion. Check the material safety data sheet or Medsafe data sheet for more information. It is good practice to have written policies describing requirements for the segregation, packaging, collection, transport, and storage of cytotoxic waste. PCBUs should also refer to their own health and safety policies and guidance regarding handling cytotoxic waste. Spills of cytotoxic drugs and related waste are a risk to human health and the environment — deal with them immediately. Keep a spill kit in all areas where there is a risk of cytotoxic drugs and related waste spills.See Appendix 4 for spill kit contents. See eviQ for more information about how to handle a cytotoxic spill: www. Provide a spill kit to patients being treated at home or in a community care setting so they can safely manage spills of cytotoxic drugs and related waste. The kit should include easy-to-read instructions, a list of kit contents, and information about how to safely dispose of used items or how cytotoxic waste will be collected. See eviQ for more information about precautions patients should take at home: www.Remove PPE in the following order to minimise exposure. Contaminated waste identification is essential to minimise the risk of exposure to cytotoxic materials and to ensure the safe and correct disposal of cytotoxic waste. All cytotoxic waste should be placed into compliant bags or containers that are appropriately identified. NZS Management of healthcare waste specifies the following colours and symbol coding for cytotoxic waste:.Just because something is possible to do, does not mean it is reasonably practicable in the circumstances. While PCBUs should check if there are widely used control measures for that risk such as industry standards , they should always keep their specific circumstances in mind.A common industry practice might not be the most effective or appropriate control measure to use. If PCBUs are not sure what control measures are appropriate, WorkSafe recommends getting advice from a suitably qualified and experienced health and safety professional. More than one PCBU can have a duty in relation to the same matter. These PCBUs have overlapping duties — this means that the duties are shared between them. Even if this occurs, all PCBUs are still responsible for meeting their legal duties.A local hotel contracts out housekeeping services to an agency. The hotel and agency both have a duty to ensure the health and safety of the housekeeping workers, so far as is reasonably practicable. This includes the duty to provide first aid facilities. Part 3 of HSWA external link. A PCBU must engage with workers during specified times, including when identifying hazards and assessing risks.A PCBU must have clear, effective, and ongoing ways for workers to suggest improvements or raise concerns. Workers can be represented by a Health and Safety Representative HSR , a union representing workers, or a person that workers authorise to represent them for example, a community or church leader, or another trusted member of the community. If workers are represented by an HSR, worker engagement must also involve that representative. Worker engagement, participation and representation. A PCBU in the supply chain upstream also has a duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the work they do or the things they provide to other workplaces do not create health and safety risks.Upstream businesses are in a strong position to eliminate or minimise risk. They can influence and sometimes eliminate health and safety risks through designing, manufacturing, importing or supplying products that are safe for the end user. A worker using a badly designed or poorly manufactured saw may be at risk of injury. This risk should have been eliminated or minimised, so far as was reasonably practicable, by the designer or manufacturer. For more information, see: Upstream duties. A designer creates or modifies a design for plant, substances or structures that are to be used or operated, or could be used or operated, in a workplace. For more information, see our guidance: Health and safety duties for businesses that design products for workplaces [PDF, 40 KB].A manufacturer makes plant, substances or structures that are to be used, or could be used or operated, in a workplace. For more information, see our guidance: Health and safety duties for businesses that manufacture products for workplaces. An importer imports plant, substances or structures that are to be used, or could be used or operated, in a workplace. Importation is another word for importing. Importation refers to the arrival of goods in New Zealand from a point outside New Zealand.
