Did you know that most puffer fish, when eaten, are toxic to predators—and even humans? According to Claricoates, despite this risk, countries such as Korea, China and Japan consider puffer fish a culinary delicacy and only specially-trained chefs know how to serve them safely. The toxin in the puffer fish, called tetrodotoxin, is found throughout its body, and is actually produced by bacteria, said Dr.Puffers that have been raised in a bacteria-free environment experimentally did not produce the toxin in that instance. However, the the chefs who prepare Fugu , or puffer fish fillets, were not interested in serving a fish that did not have the toxin, as the numbing effect from the toxin when the fish is eaten is the appeal of eating puffer fish, he said.Even with proper preparation by a trained chef, about a half dozen diners die every year from the paralyzing effects of eating puffer fish, so they should generally not be considered food. Despite using their fins to help them swim with a tail fin acting as a rudder , puffer fish are notoriously slow-moving. However, they do have other methods for deterring—or defeating—predators out to get them, said Claricoates, including:. Puffer fish do not have scales, but instead have spines which you may not be able to get a good look at until they puff up , said Claricoates. As a fish owner, you have to be sure that the water quality is excellent—specifically nitrite, nitrate and ammonia levels in your tank. If these levels are high, it often indicates a dirty tank, and can create health issues for your fish, she said.Water checks can be done by fish stores for you on a monthly basis or you can purchase a home kit to test your water, she said. A puffer fish, if kept in an ideal environment, can live up to ten years. In the wild, puffer fish are predators, and eat a variety of snails, shellfish, crustaceans and other fish, said Claricoates. In captivity, puffers will eat almost anything, so a variety of foods should be offered to allow for a healthy mix, she said.Claricoates recommends a diet consisting of foods with shells, including blue crab, mussels, clams, shrimp, live snails and bloodworms. She also advised that when or if you are offering live food, it must be quarantined in a separate aquarium for a month prior to feeding it to your puffer fish. This ensures the food is healthy and prevents puffer illness from unhealthy food. The diet of the pufferfish includes mostly invertebrates and algae.Large specimens will even crack open and eat clams, mussels, and shellfish with their hard beaks. Poisonous puffers are believed to synthesize their deadly toxin from the bacteria in the animals they eat. Some species of pufferfish are considered vulnerable due to pollution, habitat loss, and overfishing, but most populations are considered stable. All rights reserved. Common Name: Pufferfish. Takanori Kurokawa, executive head chef at Soseki, London, held a blowfish licence about 12 years ago when working in Tokyo. According to Kurokawa, there's a lot of toxin in the testicles, but pickling them for up to a year will dilute the poison.Nevertheless, he says, "I don't agree with eating this part and wouldn't recommend anyone else doing so. The blowfish sashimi, or "fugu", on the other hand, "is delicious and usually eaten in winter. It is gelatinous, doesn't smell fishy, and has the most umami [that savoury flavour often associated with monosodium glutamate] of all the fish. Nearly all fatalities occur when untrained persons prepare and eat them. But, purely in the spirit of curiosity ie don't try this at home , how does one go about preparing a blowfish?

The Romans were then believed to have adopted a month calendar with days, leaving the remaining 50 or so days as an unorganized winter. This calendar allowed the summer and winter months to become completely misplaced, leading to the adoption of more accurate calendars. The Republican calendar later used by Rome followed Greek calendars in its assumptions of From this point, many attempts were made to align the Republican calendar with the solar year including the addition of an extra month to certain years to supplant the lack of days in a particular year.In 46 BC, the calendar was further reformed by Julius Caesar, introducing an algorithm that removed the dependence of calendars from the observation of the new moon.In order to accomplish this, Caesar inserted an additional 10 days into the Republican calendar, making the total number of days in a year He also added the intercalation of a leap day every fourth year, all in an attempt to further synchronize the Roman calendar with the solar year. Despite all efforts, the Julian calendar still required further reform, since the calendar drifted with respect to the equinoxes and solstices by approximately 11 minutes per year.By , this resulted in a difference of 10 days from what was expected. An adjustment was also made to the algorithm of the Julian calendar that changed which century years would be considered leap years.Under the Gregorian calendar, century years not divisible by would not be leap years. These changes reduced the error from 1 day in years, to 1 day in 3, years with respect to the current value of the mean solar year. The adoption of the Gregorian calendar occurred slowly over a period of centuries, and despite many proposals to further reform the calendar, the Gregorian Calendar still prevails as the most commonly used dating system worldwide.A holiday is a day that, either by custom or by law, is set aside such that regular activities like going to work or school is suspended, or at least reduced.
