This is a Faustian story in which a supposedly "good" character makes a deal with "the devil" Consumerism is also celebrated, drinking occurs without consequences, and women are treated as sex objects.

Positive Role Models. The main character is supposed to be a smart Princeton student, but his questionable logic and behavior make him anything but a role model though at least he comes to understand that he's made a mistake and works to correct it. No other characters qualify as positive role models, either. The main character gets beaten up by a group of thugs, and a little trickle of blood is shown on his face. He's also abducted and tossed in a truck with a bag pulled over his head.

In another scene, he's chased by a car and briefly assaulted. Two minor characters are fed to crocodiles, but only one is eaten the other is fished out in time.

Viewers briefly see a black-and-white sex tape on a TV screen, which shows a minor male character and two women in bed. Sex is fairly visible. Otherwise, all of the women in the movie are scantily clad and treated as sex objects. One male character slaps a woman's bottom and describes her as "first class, not coach. The other male lead kisses her on the neck in one scene.

Many uses of "f--k. The movie is mainly about making -- and spending -- tons of money. Adult characters are often shown drinking beers at parties or out celebrating, but no one ever appears drunk or has a drinking problem or consequences of any kind, really. Characters occasionally drink stronger things like scotch or vodka. Drugs are planted in a character's belongings as part of a set-up.

Characters are seen smoking cigars. Filled with lush views of tropical beaches, expensive parties and apartments, and sumptuously beautiful but barely characterized women, "Runner Runner" is the kind of meat-and-potatoes genre picture that might be passable if the people involved in making it had given the same thought and concentration to the development of the plot and the ending as they did to the fairly involving set-up. In its two male leads, "Runner Runner" offers a study in contrasts.

He holds the screen, and he loves being on it. He seems irritated that he even had to memorize his lines. Affleck has always been a strange case. His eyes are hooded and inexpressive, and his voice is inexpressive, and his body seems sedentary even in movement. He has none of the joy or need or skill of an actor, and he never really did. At the climax of the film, when his character is supposed to look surprised, Affleck merely turns his head slightly and blinks his eyes a couple of times, like an exhausted coquette.

Recast Ivan Block with any number of actors and "Runner Runner" might have been small-time but diverting fun. Did you know Edit. Trivia Although set in Costa Rica, the majority of the scenes in the movie were filmed in Puerto Rico.

Goofs When Richie Furst, is playing online poker to make his tuition there are several shots showing that he is actually playing on a Play Money Table - meaning no real money is being wagered. Quotes Ivan Block : That little voice in the back of your head right now, it's not conscience, it's fear.

User reviews Review. Top review. Highly Entertaining Action Movie. In Princeton, the student Richie Furst Justin Timberlake is a former Wall Street broker that lost everything in the stock market crash a couple of years ago. Richie supports himself and pays the institution promoting online gambling in Princeton.

When he is denounced by one student to Dean Alex Monroe Bob Gunton , Richie receives an ultimatum and is forced to stop his activity. Further, he decides to bet all his savings to finance the rest of his graduation. However he loses all his money and discovers that he has been swindled by the powerful Ivan Block Ben Affleck that owns the site.

Richie travels to a gambling convention in Costa Rica expecting to meet Ivan, and he meets his lover and employee Rebecca Shafran Gemma Arterton that gives an invitation to him for the party. Richie meets Ivan that refunds him and invites Richie to work for him.

Richie is seduced by the offer and moves to Costa Rica expecting to become rich. Soon Richie finds the truth about the disloyal Ivan and he has to find a way out to escape from Ivan and Shavers using his intelligence and money. Fortunately I did not pay attention to the bad reviews in IMDb and we saw "Runner Runner" yesterday in a group of three.

Everybody enjoyed this film that is not a masterpiece but a good entertainment even for a Saturday night. My vote is seven. Details Edit. Release date October 4, United States. United States. English Spanish.
