Love your blogs. Planning to climb Mount Kinabalu nxt March. Only half of us managed to summit. Great experience! Hi, I have just read the article on climbing Mt Kinabalu. I climbed that mountain with some local tribesmen Dusans in long before it was ever a tourist attraction and our overnight stop was a small corrugated tin hut, it was a very difficult climb in those days but well worth it.
Thanks for catching that typo. That line has been in there for quite some time. Glad it is fixed now. Didnt help that we turned up at the gates at 3pm just as they were closing so we had a fairly speedy 3.
Definitely agree about the descent- tough on the knees! We have a mountain this side in my hometown South-Africa barely 1. Thanks for the beautiful pics. We were in South Africa in and loved it there. Table Mountain looks like it would be a tough climb. Have you tried that one? There are two trails to the peak, Ranau and Kota Belud trails.
To see the difference, please click here. The new Ranau Trail 1. Climbers are only allowed to climb up and down Mount Kinabalu via Timpohon Gate and ascend the peak using one of the two new trails; Ranau Tail, located east of the old trail and Kota Belud Trail, to the west. Both trails will meet at Sayat Sayat. This Ranau trail is now the standard "tourist-friendly" trail leading to the summit from Panalaban as it is relatively easier and safer because the path is less steep and mostly made of wooden staircases and manageable rock steps.
Climbers will take the minibus to the Timpohon Gate and their ascent commence at about 9 a. All climbers must be accompanied by mountain guides at all times. Before reaching Panalaban 3,m; 10, ft where all the huts that provide rooms, food and hot beverages are located, climbers will encounter a series of trail shelters pondok — the first shelter, Pondok Kandis 1,m; 6, ft , and the second shelter, Pondok Ubah 2,m; 6, ft. The forest becomes thicker and mosses and ferns become abundant. After 30 minutes, the third shelter, Pondok Lowii 2,m; 7, ft is reached.
Soon after, the trail splits with one leading to telecom towers and the main trail to the summit continues on the right. After Pondok Mempening m; ft , the fouth shelter, the trail soon leads to an open exposed area at Layang-Layang 2,m; 8, ft where there is a small mountain rescue hut located here.
Climbers will notice an abundance of pitcher plants. My asthma kicked in with the altitude so it was very difficult for me but I found that the climbers helped others, especially close to the summit! My favorite hike to date!
Did this for my 40th birthday as it had always been on the list. A really wonderful yet challenging hike. It is pretty relentless both up and back, and with the high humidity level was very sweaty. Sadly we missed the via Ferrata and peak at sunrise as it started raining at 1am so they shut the gate. Beautiful journey thru rainforest with a constantly changing environment, in which plant and animal life varies with changes in elevation. Climbing up Mount Kinabalu and you may notice that the temperatures get colder, tree species change or disappear altogether, and the plants and animal species are different than those found on lower ground.
It was my first hiking trip and it was very memorable. Great experience, rewarded with a superb view at the summit overlooking sunrise. Absolutely incredible. One of the best experiences of my life. Recommend hiking to lodge and heading to the peak for sunrise. Just amazing. Could not recommend enough! Have done this twice. Best to hike to lodge, have a meal and sleep, then hike the last part in the dark so you can see the sunrise from the top.
Unforgettable experience. Epic hike up the mountain with gorgeous plant life along the way and incredible views at the summit. There's a lodge near the top where you can grab food and snacks and even spend thr night if you are unable to summit the peak in one day.
Stunning scenery with fairly easy ascend until the resthouse with thousands of stairs and the climb turns tougher towards the peak. Super fun climb def will come again! By far the most rewarding and difficult hike I've ever done. This climb is intense.
The main path from Timpohon Gate is only 8. There are a number of small stations that provide a spot to rest, eat, and use the bathroom. Almost every tour will have a stop at the Laban Rata guesthouse, which is a surprisingly great guesthouse with good food which has to be carried up the mountain by porters. The last km of the hike to get to Laban Rata is definitely the hardest for the first day, as it becomes very steep and altitude begins to take its toll.
The final stage of the climb is the harshest, as altitude sickness often sets in. You have to fight the wind and cold, and often fog and rain if you're especially unlucky. The path alternates between wooden staircases and bare granite with guiding ropes. The entire summit area has zero cover or protection, so you are at the mercy of the elements. The summit itself is at the top of a tough rocky scramble, and is marked by a fence and a large sign.
The view at the top, particularly the sunrise, is amazing. Just make sure you bring lots of warm clothes gloves and a hat are mandatory. One of the best hikes of my life. Very difficult but rewarding. TIP: the lodge currently does not have drinkable water and you need to purchase bottled water from the lodge store. Pretty tense up.. But it was all worth it once u reach Laban Rata The food is ok and the price for their food is not really pricey if u see how the porter bring it all up..
Accommodation is so so but its only like 8 to 1am before u start to hike again.. Temperature can drop to 6c or less on rainy day Peak will be around - 1c or 2c Really need to work out n train for this.. At least train with lots of stairs I was thrilled to have finished it but just a word of caution. This trek is not recommended for beginners who have not trained. It is steps, steps and more steps.
Make sure you get as many squats in as possible and condition your legs. It's as tough to get up as it is to go down. On the other hand, the feeling when you are on TOP of the world is insane and that thrill is amazing! Approaching the mountain by vehicle all you see is the massive mountain looming over you as you wind up the mountainous roads towards the trailhead. The route is very popular and busy so you have to have a reservation and pick up your summit pass.
The trail itself - it's mostly a relentless staircase all the way up. There are some rest stops in the lower portion which have shelters and a water supply at intervals. Typically visitors stay over night, refulleing with food and a short sleep before waking up a few hours before sawn to make your way up the last bit to catch the sunrise at the summit.
This portion is still quite tough and exposed, especially with the altitude, I was certainly feeling the effects with the shortness of breath. The sunrise at the summit is spectacular, with the mountains casting a shadow on the clouds below. On the way down I did the Via Ferrata, not for the feint of heart if you have any height phobias, but I was comfortable with it and it was worth it despite the high cost.
The Ferrata ends up at the Laban Rata hut. After that, it's just pound down the mountain and hope your knees hold up. A must do hike, but you have to be in somewhat good shape and should train before.
It's a steep climb all the way so the legs get very tired on the way down. Not a pleasant track. Watch out for the pitcher plants though! It's nice up on the granite slab at the top!
