In one of the ironies of history, Ho Chi Minh paraphrased a future enemy's benchmark of freedom — the U. Declaration of Independence -- while addressing an enormous crowd after the success against the Japanese. Ho proclaimed: "All men are born equal. The Creator has given us inviolable rights: life, liberty, and happiness! The nation's freedom was short-lived, however, as the French tried to reassert their colonial rule over Vietnam after World War II.
Ho again led revolutionary forces against outside control, fighting an eight-year war that led to the division of Vietnam into two countries, North and South Vietnam. An election that was meant to be held in to reunite the country under a democratically elected leader was never held. South Vietnam, backed by the United States, refused to participate in the elections, fearful Ho would win.
Under these adverse conditions, Ho's regime in the North became rigidly totalitarian. There was only a single bed, a wardrobe, a radio, a pair of slippers, and two pairs of khaki clothes. It was a great simplicity of a man who sacrificed his whole life the country and people. He is a great example of the revolutionary spirit of resilience, the spirit of independence, self-control, humanity, and love for the people, ethics, carelessness and simplicity.
His thoughts and virtues forever illuminate and elevate our hearts and minds. It has been nearly 50 years since President Ho Chi Minh passed away. In remembrance of the great work of the beloved leader, the whole Party, people and army are actively striving to gain achievements to celebrate the th anniversary of his birth; and are determined to fulfil the targets set by the 12th National Party Congress. Remembering him, generations of Vietnamese people are forever proud of an immortal person, as our Party has affirmed, Ho Chi Minh is the son of our people and country and he is truly a national hero that made our people and country proud.
Friday, Toggle navigation. By , Ho was the undisputed leader of the country. When the government of South Vietnam, which was not party to that portion of the agreement, refused to play into his hands, Ho created the National Liberation Front for South Vietnam and began the second phase of his war for a unified Vietnam.
First, however, Ho ruthlessly consolidated his power in the North. In November , when peasants in his home province protested, some 6, were murdered in cold blood. With such actions, Ho proved he was a worthy contemporary of Lenin, Stalin and Mao Tse-tung, who had also built their empires with the blood of their countrymen. He had certainly led his native Communist Party through almost 40 years of success, creating a state where none had existed before and devising a Communist government to run it.
He was a national leader with strong internationalist credentials, having served the Communist Party throughout Europe and Asia for more than 20 years before his return to Vietnam. He led a Communist Party unique in that it had never had a major purge or a major theoretical dispute. As a mature Communist leader, he steered a middle course between the Russians and Chinese in their great schism, offending neither and retaining the support of both.
In sum, Ho Chi Minh was that great contradiction: a dedicated Communist who was also a fervent nationalist. Throughout his life he never lost sight of his goal of an independent Vietnamese state, and even as a Communist leader he pursued an essentially Vietnamese course, even when pure Communist theory might have dictated other choices. Yet there is no doubt that he was fully committed to the Communist ideal, that he accepted it completely in , and that he never had second thoughts.
In any case, he was never the doctrinaire, and always much more a political activist whose strong will was directed at the goal of the independence and unification of Vietnam.
